Maybe the sensor tech will be introduced in the a7Rv and only make it into the a7v in a couple of years. Maybe the big sensor tech reveal won't make it into the a7iv, and it will only be a half-step up from the R6 as a hybrid camera. I'm shooting with an A7 from 2012 right now and, while the A7iii sensor handles low light a bit better, otherwise I see no compelling need to upgrade. I think some big jumps in sensor development are due that could make a material difference in dynamic range, color depth, single shot hdr, or other, that might impact basic photography. I'm wagering that Sony hasn't been doing nothing the last 3 years in developing a replacement for the bestselling a7iii, and I'm hoping it's not just AF refinements and video features. I'm mostly a photographer as well (mostly landscape), and the only video I'm interested in is slow mo and time lapse. the a7iv, it's a gamble, but it's one I'm making. That's a huge difference as a value proposition, and b/c Canon keeps its mount and AF specs secret, unlike Sony, that 3d party ecosystem is unlikely to ever be as good based on reverse engineering alone.Īs for the a7iii vs. Canon has some nice lenses, but pricey, and so far no 3d party lens ecosystem like the Tamron and Sigmas for Sony which can match the manufacturers lenses for 1/3-1/2 the cost. You end up with a 20MP sensor, which has caught up to the 3 year old Sony A7III in sensitivity and dynamic range, but nice ergonomics. Of course most likely is your friend did video with a mic and stressed out the jack, but I'd still be wary.Īs for the R6, I'm not convinced, particularly since you're not a video shooter. Two, electronics degrade on a bathtub graph, and once things start to go bad they kind of accelerate. One, it could be indicative of something deeper coming loose or of a drop. I'm always concerned about electronics with a broken element. I think you can do as well or better on ebay unless your friend is willing to include a warranty. Should I wait it out? Purchase an R6? I understand most folks will say HSA the difference for glass, but is this a pretty good deal regardless of being able to use any extra money for lenses (R6 is $1300+ more than what I’d pay for this A7III)? Is this a good deal? A7III just dropped to $1700, most likely cause A7IV is on the way. I can adjust to menus, I need new glass with one brand or another, I’m used to the very responsive touch screen on my 77D (smartphone level responsiveness), but I can survive without it (I understand A7III has touch, but not same level of touch screen as 77D). So I’m not sure if my calling the A7III old is fair, as I’m not experienced in purchasing camera gear, as I’ve only done it once.

Being a first time DSLR user with my 77D, I’m not sure how folks usually upgrade, but in all honesty, other than wanting more low light ability, higher FPS continuous shooting, and full frame, I wouldn’t see any need at all to upgrade or purchase a new camera. Is this a good deal? Any concerns I have are probably based consumerism and G.A.S., but I’d be afraid of buying a camera (which I hop and to hold onto for at least another 5+ years) that is already on the older side relatively speaking (released in April 2018).Ĭonsumerism has trained us to upgrade phones and tech as soon as a new one comes out. I’m primarily a photographer, and have literally never done video, so the audio jack mic input isn’t a dealbreaker for me. I have a friend who’s selling his A7III, 30k shutter count, busted audio jack mic input, for $1300 USD. I’m not really tied down to canon, as I only own a Sigma 17-50 f2.8 lens, and would have to get full frame glass regardless of ecosystem. I’m a canon 77D user, looking for my first full frame.

TLDR: As title says, is a Sony a7III, 30k shutter, non functioning audio jack, for $1300 USD worth it in 2020 (almost 2021) for a stills photographer, not tied to any full frame ecosystem?
